Our latest spotlight focuses on Ashley Bartholomew, a dedicated educator whose passion for building confidence and creating a supportive environment is making a lasting impact on our school community
Rooted in Oregon: A Lifelong Journey in Education

Ashley grew up in Milwaukie, Oregon, and has spent her entire life in the Pacific Northwest. “I’ve lived in Oregon my whole life,” she says, reflecting on her deep connection to the state. From family vacations in Seaside to weekend sleepovers at her grandmother’s house, her childhood was filled with family and adventure. Ashley had a close bond with her grandmother who taught elementary school in her hometown. It was her grandmother’s love and creativity in the classroom that sparked Ashley’s own desire to teach. “She was one of the most amazing, loving people I knew. I just really wanted to be like her.”
Ashley pursued her dream by attending George Fox University, where she majored in Elementary Education and earned her PreK-12 teaching license with an ESOL endorsement. Drawn to the university’s small class sizes, community focus, and beautiful campus, she likens the university’s individualized learning approach to what Bridges offers its middle school students.
A Unique Start
Ashley’s first foray into teaching was shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic. Her student teaching experience, largely online, forced her to be very creative in ways to engage her first graders. “For online school, I made signs to communicate with the kids, like ‘Think of the answer’ or ‘On three, whisper the answer,’” she shares. This experience taught her the importance of using tone, interactive lessons, and thoughtful lesson planning to keep students of all ages engaged.
After graduating in 2021, Ashley gained diverse classroom experience subbing in various school districts and teaching 4th grade before finding her home at Bridges Middle School.
Why Bridges?

When Ashley started subbing at Bridges, she was immediately drawn to the small class sizes, the student-centered philosophy, and the supportive leadership. “I was impressed with the kids and how the school operated,” she recalls. Now, in her full-time role, she is privileged to work with both Flamingoes and Ravens.
Ashley’s teaching philosophy is rooted in two key beliefs: “All behavior is communication” and “All students need to feel safe and welcome.” These guiding principles help her connect with her students, especially those who may struggle to express themselves. “It’s important to always believe the best, even if they’re showing a different behavior,” she explains, emphasizing her commitment to understanding her students’ needs and creating a safe, welcoming space where they can thrive.
Building Confidence in Every Student

One of Ashley’s primary goals is to help students see themselves as valuable and capable. She’s passionate about building their confidence, especially those who may not yet recognize their own potential. “Students are able to do hard things,” she firmly believes, and she works tirelessly to ensure they feel supported and empowered along their learning journey.

Outside of teaching, Ashley enjoys spending time with her boyfriend, Jadon, walks in nature, painting, and playing video games—a hobby that has proven useful in building connections with her students.
We’re grateful to have Ashley Bartholomew as part of the Bridges team. Her dedication to her students, her passion for individualized learning, and her belief in the power of confidence-building make her an invaluable member of our community.
